The TechRen Foundation
Fairness, Accountability & Equal Justice Program
The Problem
-
Family courts disproportionately harm disabled parents, low-income litigants, and disenfranchised fathers.
-
Enforcement laws often trap families in poverty instead of supporting children.
-
Courts frequently ignore disability, deny representation to pro se litigants, and enforce outdated punitive laws
Harmful Laws & Practices
-
Bradley Amendment (1986): Blocks retroactive child support adjustments, even for disability or job loss.
-
Contempt & Incarceration: Jailing parents for unpaid support without proving ability to pay equals to modern-day debtors’ prison.
-
License Suspensions: Blocks work and stability by suspending driver/professional licenses.
-
Bias Against Pro Se Litigants: Self-represented parents are often dismissed or disadvantaged in court
Our policy Demands
-
Amend the Bradley Amendment to allow relief when circumstances change (disability, unemployment, wrongful calculation).
-
Limit use of contempt & jail to willful refusal, not inability to pay.
-
End license suspensions for unpaid judgments that prevent work.
-
Guarantee access to legal aid in family law and disability-related cases.
-
Enforce equal caregiving rights for fathers and disabled parents.
Why This Matters
-
Families collapse when parents are stripped of dignity, homes, and children.
-
Disabled parents and low-income fathers are punished for circumstances outside their control.
-
Reforming family law restores fairness, protects children, and reduces taxpayer burdens from homelessness and unemployment.
